Surrealism
The central idea of my concentration is modeled after Surrealism. My goal was to make the images seem lifelike, but with unexpected twists with a fantasy-like quality at second glance. I explore the idea of surrealism by making each piece look as life-like as possible while giving each one a unique twist to make the viewer stop and contemplate their own perception of my work. I use split complementary colors to make the colors contrast and look more vibrant. For example, I rendered Tentacle Takeover and Triple Vision while using a split complementary colors scheme to make the warm figure stand out from the cool background. I used repetition of the circle shape of the iris in Triple Vision throughout the background to create geometric shapes and to add a sense of formalism to the painting. Once rendered, I put them into photoshop to give them a flat background to help create a sense of space around the figure. Eyes Never Age , which was rendered with colored pencils and then put into photoshop to make the background have a flat texture. Having half a figure on either side of the piece to show the progression of age floating across the page to add a fantasy-like quality. I also used photoshop for Good Hostess to also give the rendered colored pencil a flat textured background. I also used photoshop to create a sense of movement and pattern in the background with the shape of part of the pineapple. Each piece has its own personality transforming the figure into a dream-like surreal estate.
